An example of saving money could include clothes, cars and food. When a normal person sees a shirt they want in a store they buy it right away, but someone who is frugal waits for a sale or for the shirt to go to clearance. The other example would be cars, which are very expensive. Why would a person ever buy a new car? The value of a car plummets way down the second you drive it off the lot. A frugal person would buy a used car because a used car with only a few thousand miles on it is almost the same as a new car. The third example of saving money would be shopping at a grocery store. Local grocery stores tend to be expensive so a frugal person would find a cheaper place to shop or use coupons to buy specific items that are cheap. These cheaper places to shop are places like 1800Flowers or 1-800-PetMeds. By shopping at place where you save money it really adds up. A person must also eat out less to be frugal because eating out will add up quickly.  A home cooked meal is cheaper than that of a restaurant.  A person could save hundreds of dollars on groceries in a given year. If my principle of buying cars would be used a person would save thousands of dollars when buying a used car over a new car. A person would also save a lot of money on clothing by not buying anything at full price. The only downside to these steps to be frugal would be the waiting for clothes to go on sale, the fun of buying a brand new car, or the convenience of going to the closest grocery store to buy food. The benefits of being frugal are that you would save money on everything you buy.

The second benefit of being frugal would be the ability to retain more money to spend on more important items. An example of this could be a flat screen TV, a house, or even a retirement fund. By saving money on your basic needs you now have the ability to put money in your retirement fund, and put more money aside for the big ticket items you want to buy down the road. Saving extra cash could also protect you financially if the economy would take a wrong turn. This is because you would have extra funds saved up in the bank to help you through tough times. Another thing is that a person that carries these principles throughout their life will save a ton of money for retirement. The benefits of being frugal by retaining more funds include extra cash to save up for more important things in your life, and extra money to help you through a future financial disaster.

The third way a person can be is by not being wasteful. The question is when you buy something is do I really need this or will I really use this? The benefits of this are that you avoid buying kick-knacks that clutter up your home and you only buy things that you absolutely need. An example of this would be buying new shoes when you have a working pair at home. Another way to prevent wasteful spending is to use something until it doesn’t work anymore like a microwave, a T-shirt, or a pair of shoes. This way of spending your money makes sure you only buy the things you absolutely need. The benefit of being frugal through not wasting money helps someone to not spend money on the things that work inside their home.

The three main ways to be a frugal person is by saving money, retaining the saved money to spend on more important things, and not being wasteful. The ways in which someone would accomplish these things would be to not buy clothes or cars at full price. A person should also buy their food at cheaper stores and reduce the amount of times they eat out. The saved money from these steps should be placed in a bank as a protection from financial ruin or saved up for important purchases. This then leads to not just saving money but making smart purchases. If you buy things you really don’t need your not being frugal. The benefits of all these steps are saved money, a focus on what you really need, and more money to help your self through a future financial crisis.

There are many ways people can get discounts for using coupons to buy goods. A person should use coupons and organize the coupons. Everyone should know the store policy on coupons. A person should have a plan for the stores and should not be fooled by offers stores have. The last thing is to build stockpile.

Finding Coupons and Organizing them

Everyone who wants to use couponing should find coupons. There are many places someone can find coupons. Sunday newspapers have coupons inside the newspaper every Sunday. Asking friends and family members for coupons they do not use will be a good way of finding coupons. Once you have gone through the coupons you can pass them along to your family members and friends so everyone can use them. People can get coupons off the Internet and use them at local stores. There are several places you can find coupons online. Sometimes there are really good coupons, and you may want several of the coupons. According to Joy (2009), people can use clipping services for multiple coupons, for example, The Coupon Clippers. People can continue to get really good deals if they have the same coupon and can use them multiple times. Some stores even have their own coupons. For example, someone can go to the target website and can print off coupons to spend at target on certain items. Store coupons can even be found on sales ads.

Once you find your coupons, you need to keep them organized so you know where they are at. Putting your coupons in an envelope is a great place for a beginner. Envelopes help people who have not been couponing long because eventually you will have too many coupons for an envelope to hold. Another method is file by insert, which does not require much work. According to Joy (2009), this helps file inserts by date in a box use an online coupon database to find coupons that you will need. This is a fast way; however, you may miss out on coupons because they were on another date. Coupon binder helps because you clip the coupons and put them in a baseball card holder. This allows you to have all your coupons at the store while you shop.

Store Coupon Policy

There are several things that stores due help people save money. Loyalty cards help because it gives customers savings on certain items that no loyalty card holders cannot receive. Some stores do double/triple coupons that help their customers save money. Everyone needs to figure out by his or her stores if they double/triple coupons, how it works, and what the maximum value of the coupons is. For example a local store here doubles the coupons as long as it is below $1. Stacking coupons help because stores allow customers to use a store coupon and a manufacturer coupon for the same item. For example, Wal-Mart will allow customers to stack their coupons. Someone can get coupons from stores as well.

Plan

Having a plan to use coupons and to save money is always a good idea. The first step of the plan is weekly ads. Weekly ads help customers figure out where the best prices are and if someone has an item on sell. Weekly ads can be found on websites in case someone does not get the ads delivered to him or her or buy the newspaper. Coupon matching can help someone save more money. According to Joy (2009), matching coupons to sell items helps someone save more money. Some stores will pricematch items that other stores have on sell as long as the item is the same. The only thing the customer has to do is take the ad to the cashier and tell him or her pricematch it to the sales price. Having a list can help you remember what you need to buy and stops you from buying unnecessary items. A store may run out of the item you want so you can get a raincheck for the sale price and get the item another day.

Shop Smart

Shopping smart helps you get the best deal and may help you realize something is not always a good deal. Kroger is big on promoting items 10/$10. Save coupons until the item you are buying goes on sell and use your coupon on the item. Some cashiers may tell you that you are only allowed to use one coupon per customer. Making a pricebook on items you regularly buy will help you see when the item goes on sale and if it is a good buy or not. Some stores have limits where you can buy something 2/$5; however, it may not be the best price on the item. Sometimes smaller is better than bigger when you have a coupon. Always make sure the cashier ran up your coupons up and that the coupons are on the receipt.

Stock Up

Every person should stock up on items they use to help save money. The best way to start stocking up on items is to start slowly so you do not spend your entire budget. Buy items for the future when the price is a good. According to Joy (2009), sales usually follow a 12-week cycle so you should buy things for 12 weeks at a time. Buying the same item several times helps save money. Pay attention to how often you use certain items. If you use four bottles of shampoo in a month, buy it when it goes on sell. Once your stockpile is too much, and you will not use everything donate the items or give the items to family or friends.

Conclusion

And for those times we dodge the bullet, man is it a feeling of relief when you found the last penny in between the cushion seats. Because I mean, what kind of a dumb number is $3.51 anyways?

It’s times like these, recently, where everyone has to pinch and bite for whatever’s available, and that also makes me question where we’re headed. Recession can bring out the absolute worst in people, when we can all lose our sense of humanity, just looking out for ours and only ours. I know that just the other day, people got into a fight at my high school over a dollar and whose it actually was. And I know that in some areas, that dollar isn’t even anyone’s to have.

But forgive the naivety; I am a strong believer in desperate experiences also bringing out our desperate best. I think that it doesn’t even have to be about having enough money for the basic needs; when we all have to suffer and save, each individually and each person part of something greater, it becomes more about efficiency, responsibility, independence. Because frugality is not a concept unique to those whose circumstances need it; it’s a measure we all have to anticipate and to use, a nightmare in the kinds of worst case scenarios we sit up in bed at night and dream of never having. But… those thoughts swimming in your head and blasting you with their reality can help to make you question what you actually need in life. And I think that that alone, such a simple and widespread phenomenon, can be equally as powerful and uniting. Because it’s something human in all of us; no one is immune to this, or at least no one should be.

I personally believe in the plain statement that ‘we are all capable of doing things’. But I also think that most of the time, we’re just too lazy to do it, without that force to push us down and get up. However, right now is perfect for that, when we need to finally step up our game, stop whining and suck things up. Finding out how little the obtainable resources are and how to utilize their maximum potential can sincerely inspire innovation in us all. Lean innovation, and it’s times like this that we don’t really have to mope, where the best can be brought out, our oh-so-scrappy best, to show the world that we can do better without, that we will succeed, and to feel an overwhelming sense of validation for our efforts.

So for me, in the end, I’m grateful to say that I don’t really think about these kinds of things as often as others have, and that my burdens pale in comparison to that of truly needy people. But at the same time in this safety net of reassurance, I can accurately reflect that my somewhat disillusioned environment won’t be here to stay. We all need to prepare for the worst, and it doesn’t have to be prepared for alone. I think… frugality’s really not all that much about saving. It’s not about spending, and it’s not even about getting the biggest bang for your buck. Being frugal is a humility in itself, to swallow your pride and not care about where your help is coming from, because you realize it’d gladly be accepted anywhere else. And most of all, I feel its biggest benefits are about the sense of community, to stick things out like everyone else until the very end.

Frugality isn’t a characteristic or something to boast about, frugality is a lifestyle; and I’d have to say a fine one at that, that we need to see in people right now.

Frugality, in its simplest form, helps a person save money in both the short and long-term. A person can save significant amounts of money by cutting out unnecessary expenditures from everyday life. Whether a person makes $50,000 a year or $300,000 dollars a year is of little relevance when it comes to being frugal. Simply opting out of an extra Starbucks coffee or buying an off brand product can help a person save a few dollars, and you’d be surprised how quickly the dollars can add up. Short-term savings will eventually turn into long-term savings, and this money can then be put to better use. Money saved can be put towards larger, but hopefully not ostentatious purchases. Simply opting to cook meals at home instead of eating out on a weekly basis might be enough to help a person begin to save money for a vacation or even a new car.

Beyond it’s most mundane benefit, frugality helps a person build self-control. Being frugal means saying no to purchases that other people wouldn’t consider skipping out on. Learning to be frugal with ones money will help a person build self-control, which every person can make use of in some way or another. Whether its learning to control ones anger or learning that the extra cookie after dinner isn’t worth the health repercussions, self control can be beneficial to all people in all walks of life.

Most importantly, frugality helps a person shift his or her focus away from materialistic things. Once we stop worrying about what brand of jeans we are wearing or what the most technologically advanced phone on the market is we are able to focus on the people around us. We spend so much time in competition with one another and trying to own the most popular gadgets and clothes that we forget how to have relationships with the very people we feel obligated to impress.

Being frugal means saving money. Being frugal means harnessing self-control. Being frugal means shifting attention from material objects to our friends, families, and surroundings. Being a frugal person means putting oneself before material objects and seeing the value in nonmaterial items. I think it’s safe to say that frugality is something that every person can benefit from, even if we all benefit from it in a different way.

The first step to practicing frugality effectively is to know where to look! There are plenty of options available so be sure that you are always attentive. You can check out your local newspaper, printable coupons, and sometimes you can even find coupons on products themselves.

Of course if you accumulate all these coupons you have to have a place to place to store them so that they are easily accessible. Try a binder, index card container, or even a coupon envelope. How you choose to organize your coupons is your preference but I chose to do so by category and date. You don’t want to reach the checkout line with a wad of coupons that are illegible for usage due to expiry date!

Strategize! Strategize! Strategize! There is a wide array of ways you can coupon to your advantage. You can stack coupons, match them upon with the stores current sales or promotions, and you coupon the clearance rack. Implementing these strategies into your couponing efforts is a surefire was to maximize your savings.

Lastly, be sure to educate yourself on store policies. Each establishment varies in their polices, promotions, and rewarding. Most stores’ have their couponing policies located on their official website. If not, you can send an inquiry e-mail.

Practicing frugality helps you be responsible and ensure money management. You have to make your money stretch when you have limited resources. If you track your spending you will have more to spend.

I am an admitted struggling college student. Couponing has helped me in regards to my saving however I still have numerous expenses from textbooks to incidentals. One bright morning, as the Frugals were gathered around their table cutting out coupons for groceries, they began talking about their neighbors, the Spenders. Mrs. Frugal commented on how little money they seemed to have. “Why,” she said, “it is almost like they spend it wherever they feel like it. Do they know about coupons and being careful with their money?”

“I am not sure that they do,” said Mr. Frugal.

“Well, we should help them by telling them about how we use our money,” said Jane Frugal.

The whole family agreed that they should do whatever they could to help the Spenders. So, with coupons in hand and advice in mind, they traversed the yard and walked up to the Spenders door. There they knocked and waited for the door to be answered.

Mr. Spender came to the door and only opened it up partway. After surveying the family with cold, tired eyes, he finally opened the door all the way.

“What do you want?” he snapped.

“We are here to share some of our money-saving tips with you”, John Frugal Jr. said. “We even brought you some coupons to help you get started!” With that, he showed Mr. Spender the fistful of coupons they brought.

“Why would I want coupons and advice? We are doing just fine on our own, thank you very much”, he said.

At that moment, Mrs. Spender called him from the kitchen. “We are thirty dollars short on our air conditioning bill!” she shrieked. “Where are we going to get the money from?

“I don’t know!” he responded, then slammed the door in the Frugal family’s faces. They could hear them through the door, yelling back and forth about money problems.

“Well… that didn’t go so well,” said Mr. Frugal. “Lets go home, fellows.”

As the family turned to leave, John Frugal hesitated. He then turned and slid the coupons under the Spender’s door. As he ran to catch up to his family, he found himself hoping that the Spenders would change their minds and use them.

Several months went by, and life went on as normal. The Frugals went about their business during the day, and spent their evening collecting coupons. They did not speak to the Spenders for a long time. It was a shock, when out of the blue, Mr. Spender called and invited them over for dinner one night. Unsure of what was going on, they accepted. That evening, they dressed and walked over to the Spender’s house. John Frugal Jr. knocked tentatively on the door, which was thrown open by a beaming Mr. Spender.

“Come in!” he said in a jolly tone. “Thank you for coming!”

As the Frugals walked into the house, they noticed that the whole family seemed much happier. The house was clean, and there were decorations that they had never noticed before. Afraid that asking Mr. Spender what had caused the change would offend him, they simply remarked on how nice the house looked. They followed him into the dining room, where the food was laid out and Mrs. Spender was waiting with the children.

“Welcome!” said Mrs. Spender, who was also beaming. “Thank you for coming, and especially for your help!”

This last comment left the Frugal family confused.

“Our… our help?” said Mr. Frugal. “How did we help?”

“With the coupons, of course!” laughed Mr. Spender. “And a jolly good help it was, to! We now have extra money for the things that we enjoy because we used those coupons! We have cut down on the amount of money we spend at the store! Ten dollars saved here, fifteen there… after a while, it really does add up!”

John Frugal Jr. beamed. “So it really did help?” he exclaimed. “I was hoping that you would use them! Are you able to pay the air conditioning bill now?”

The rest of the Frugal family tensed up in anticipation of the response such a rude question might receive. However, Mr. Spender merely chuckled.

“Able to pay that and more!” he boomed with a huge grin on his face. “Now, I am hungry. Who is ready to eat?” And with a hearty cheer, everyone enjoyed the extra money that using coupons had brought the Spenders.
